Happy Kings Day!

Posted on

A couple of days late to the party but during this Lockdown period the days are all merging in to one! I could have sworn yesterday was Thursday (it was in fact Tuesday).

If you haven't heard, Koningsdag is celebrated on the 27th April every year. This huge festival is to celebrate King Willem-Alexander's Birthday. Both Tourists and the Dutch flock to their nearest Cities to celebrate in style from morning to late into the night. Orange is the Royal's colour therefore the streets and people choose to be covered in orange clothing, flags and other novelties.

It is a National Holiday and many businesses choose to close but you will find the whole of Amsterdam turns into one big Vrijmarkt (free market) where anyone can sell their wares including secind hand goods, food and souvenirs. Most Bars and Restaurants stay open and you will be spoilt for choice.

The atmosphere changes as the evening comes, you will find the street vendors packing away to make room for Musicians and DJ's. You will find entertainment on every street but I must warn it does get a little crazy after dark and no place really for the children.

All in all it is a fun, major event and the streets are jam packed plus you'll find queues for everything....BUT what an experience to have! I must mention Hotels and Hostels get booked up very early on for this and their prices are at the peak so if you are wanting to attend I would certainly start making plans now.
