Poffertjes

No, Im not swearing at you!

Poffertjes (also known as brothers') are very similar to Pancakes but much smaller.  They are a traditonal Dutch treat made with Buckwheat Flour and Yeast. These are served warm with melted Butter and a thick dusting of Icing Sugar. I first discovered these delicious sweet pancakes after a visit to the Heineken Brewery.

Just a few feet away from the Brewery on Van Randwijkplantsoen is a quirky Cafe called De Carousel Pannekoeken. I have visited many times and its always busy with a really cheerful vibe. Plenty of tables inside which are situated around the main focus of a mini Carousel in the centre and a few tables outside on their terrace too. The Menu is pretty extensive with plenty of Breakfast and Lunch options including a full Fry Up or Pancakes as we know them BUT their most amazing item has to be their Poffertjes. Other than the food, we tend to visit with the kids as they have a lovely kids area with toys, books and a TV playing Dutch Cartoons plus just around the corner from the Cafe is a lovey adventure playground perfect for the children to burn their sugar rushes off.

Anyway...back to the Poffetjes! These are served with lots of toppings to choose from although I choose the same every time, Black Cherries and Cream! They are little mouthfuls of deliciousness and suit many toppings from Fruit to Chocolate.

I visit Albert Heijn (a typically Dutch Supermarket) before coming home on every visit just to stock up with these. Normally they are made fresh but luckily you can buy a packet of ready made Poffertjes for around 2 Euro's.

Most Summer Festivals and Christmas Markets have a Poffertjes Stall but Ive also discovered that the Albert Cuyp market have a few Traders offering these too.

I guess what Im saying is you cannot go to Amsterdam without trying Poffertjes!
